Slight Dilemma of the Burbs
Since the recent move, I now find myself in a situation where going to Wal-Mart for a needed item (say, a piece of rope) is a 1.5 mile round-trip drive (or scoot, or bike, or walk), while going to the nearest independent-ish hardware merchant for the same thing involves 10 miles round-trip. Which is the better choice?

Go to the hardware store, buy enough rope for this and the next two things that need to be tied. While you are there buy some screws and some eyebolts and some plumbing strapping and some stove wire.
Hardware store. Bike there. You'll be glad you did.
Concur with Ruben and brushfiremedia, help independent merchants survive. Walmart is not a good corporate citizen AND the stores are just icky.
